December 1 – World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is an international day that has been celebrated annually on December 1 since 1988 and is dedicated to raising awareness about the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and the memory of those who died from this disease, In this regard, the staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Family Medicine of the Medical Faculty No. 2 Tashkent Medical Academy, together with the deputy dean of the Faculty for Youth Work and tutors, organized a spiritual and educational event in the dormitory No. 7 of the TMA under the motto “We can contribute to the spread of AIDS!”.

The goal of World AIDS Day is to help further research to improve the lives of people suffering from AIDS and eradicate the potentially deadly virus. The idea of setting this day was first conceived in August 1987 by James Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers of the World Health Organization’s global AIDS program in Geneva, Switzerland. During the event, students got acquainted with what AIDS is, the ways and course of its transmission, complications and prevention. The purpose of the event is to give students a broad understanding of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the causes and consequences of its infection and to show that every citizen in society plays an important role in its spread and transmission.

According to the seminar, based on the figures provided by UNAIDS, in 2020 the number of HIV—infected people worldwide amounted to about 37.7 million people. Of these, 36 million were adults (53% of women and girls), and 1.7 million were children aged 0 to 14 years. According to data for 2020, the number of cases of this disease in Uzbekistan is 58 thousand people, about 1,000 people died from this disease. At the end of the event, students consolidated their knowledge through a blitz survey and received answers to their questions.
