During pregnancy, mental disorders are rare, which may be associated with stabilizing and neuroprotective effect of female sex hormones produced in large quantities. The resulting pathological conditions are mainly exacerbation of the existing disease and indicate an increased risk in the postpartum period.
Mental and behavioral disorders associated with the puerperium are classified under the heading F53 “Mental and behavioral disorders associated with the puerperium, not elsewhere classified”. This heading only includes mental disorders associated with the puerperium (occurring within 6 weeks of delivery) that do not meet the criteria applicable to disorders classified elsewhere in this class.
